Early popularity of the vending machine
Before becoming popular in the U.S., vending machines had a long history in Europe. The first commercial vending machine, which dispensed post cards, was used in London in the early 1880s. Thomas Adams Gum Company introduced the vending machine to the U.S. in 1888. He installed vending machines in New York City's elevator subway platforms to sell Tutti-Frutti gum.
